Hardware is not dead

While we have argued extensively that value is moving from mechanical features to software and digital intelligence, this absolutely does not mean that physical hardware design becomes irrelevant. On the contrary, the best smart connected products still require truly great hardware engineering. Successful hardware engineers today combine classic skills like user ergonomics, usage of new and adaptive high-tech materials and fabrics, and miniaturization, with newer skills like agile iteration using 3D printing. These hardware engineers also need to have a much deeper understanding of and appreciation for both the data that will be generated by their hardware and the software that will enable the digital intelligence of the overall product. If we had to name a leading example we would go for Apple, where hardware engineers seem to have combined such skills in developing the groundbreaking, disruptive iPhone.
